How to choose in this category

Food processing lines are turnkey sets of connected machines from raw-material intake to packed product: tomato paste and tomato processing, mayonnaise-ketchup-sauce, dairy processing and pasteurisation, and filling-packaging lines. Choosing a line starts with the product, the capacity definition and the plant's utilities, before any single machine.

Selection criteria

  • Pin down what capacity refers to: raw-material intake or finished output. For products concentrated by evaporation, such as tomato paste, tonnes of tomatoes processed per day and tonnes of paste produced differ widely.
  • A line is more than machines: steam, process water, compressed air, cooling and electrical supply are needed for it to run. Offers should state separately whether these utilities are in scope.
  • The layout runs product flow in one direction from the raw to the clean zone, without crossing raw-material, finished-goods and staff routes. In the EU this helps meet the general layout and design requirements of food hygiene Regulation 852/2004.
  • Fix the recipe and the destination market's product standard (dry matter, additives, packaging) before line design; a recipe that changes later often means a machine change.
